Stuart worked as a fabricator and builder before studying static mechanics at college as well as a Foundation in Art. He then progressed to Exeter School of Arts, where he obtained a BA Hons in 3D Design. The degree included the hands on side of making furniture such as fine carpentry, metal working, mould making and finishing techniques. This gave him an excellent grounding in the production of furniture which he built on in his final year by specialising in cutting edge fabrication techniques.

Since graduating, Stuart has been working as a freelance designer alongside creating his own designs. He has featured at New Designers, 100% Design 'Futures' part of London Design week, Grand Designs Live, Home and Interiors Scotland as well as featuring countless times in the design press worldwide. Stuart has just been highlighted in Channel 4's 4Homes Who Are 2009's Top New Designers?

'I love experimenting with materials and pushing new ways of fabrication. I am an uncompromising perfectionist and all the pieces are individually hand made to the finest quality'.

"Stuart Melrose is top of the tech, designing lyrical surfaces for lustrous curvy Corian tables with delicate decoration that exploits veneer, inlay and other techniques. A super sophisticate" The essential 100, Barbara Charndler (London Evening Standard Homes & Property design writer)

After the launch of Stuart Melrose™ in September 2007, his initial range of Corian tables is already being hailed as iconic. All of Stuart Melrose™ furniture is individually hand made to order in the UK. The use of only the finest materials together with superb build quality ensures that his furniture will bring lasting pleasure.

The first range of tables is made mostly from DuPont’s Corian®. An amazing solid surface, Corian is an advanced blend of natural minerals and acrylic polymer. This gives it the weight and feel of stone. Corian is so durable it is used for high quality kitchen and bathroom surfaces through to stunning external sculptures at The Royal Festival Hall.

"I love working with Corian because it combines a special tactile beauty together with durability. I want to make quality pieces of furniture that will retain their looks over years to come - so I expect a lot from a material!"
